There is no dispute amongst scienctists that more trees are better than fewer trees.
Tree planting is bad when…
However, tree planting is bad under certain conditions:
- When trees are planted for “rapid timber production or carbon capture”, including monoculture tree plantations
- When we plant trees just to replace existing ecosystems, such as peatlands.
- When it is not done in collaboration with the local people
- When it is assumed that it is the most effective and sole solution to climate change
Let’s plant the right tree in the right place.

Use Ecosia instead of Google
- Ecosia uses Microsoft’s Bing under the hood, so you will notice results are “not very Google” and might deem it not very “effective”. But it is a tradeoff I’m willing to make.
